Friday, April 14, 2006 - Troll Falls and 'plumb lookout

This is one of my favorites for all the waterfalls you come across in above Troll falls. Once you break out of the trees you follow the skiing trails to the Humming bird lookout. It over looks the Upper Kananaskis valley north of Mt. Allen.

Distance: 10.5 km total
Gain: 395 m
High Point: 1865 m
Difficulty: Day Hike

Saturday, April 15, 2006 - Grotto Canyon

This is a hike up the Grotto creek valley. Near the beginning you go though a tight canyon laced with rock climbers' bolts and past a Indian hieroglyphs then a waterfall, usually frozen at this time of year. The valley opens up after this and there are a number of hoodoos. This distance is to the end of the valley we can turn around at any time.

Hike Details:
Distance: 6.3 km (one way) 12.6 km total
Gain: 670 m
High Point: 1981 m
Difficulty: Day Hike

Sunday, April 16, 2006 - Prairie View to Jewel Pass

This is a very popular hike any time of year. One starts out crossing the Barrier Lake dam then working up the ridge on the other side following a number of switchbacks. After passing a few good view points and maybe visiting the Fire lookout on the summit, one should stop for lunch on the ridge top. The hike down is on the back side in a tight pine forest. Then you work you way out to Barrier Lake and hike along the lake shore back to the dam.

Hike Details:
Distance: 13.2 km (return)
Gain: 625 m
Difficulty: Day Hike

I decided no to go out hiking today.

Saturday, April 22, 2006 - Jura Creek

This trail follows the Jura Creek bed. Right at the beginning one is forced into one of the tightest canyons I have found in the Rockies, if this in done later in the year be prepared to get your feet wet. If you don't want get wet there is a way around. From there the creek opens up until what is called the Potholes, a great place to have a bath. There is not much to see from here on but if you want to climb Loader Peak, turn Right and start climbing up. Again this distance is for the end of the valley, one can turn around at any time.

Hike Details:
Distance: 7.5 km (one way) 15 km total
Gain: 670 m
High Point: 1981 m
Difficulty: Day Hike

Sunday, April 30, 2006 - Porcupine Creek

The terrain for the most part is easy on this hike up the Porcupine Creek bed great for people wanting to get off the beating track. If you take the left hand fork, you can gain a number of ridges, but going that far will take a long time. On the way there are 3 gorges to hike though, unlike Jura creek you will not get your feet wet. Again this distance is for the end of the valley, one can turn around at any time.

Hike Details:
Distance: 7.4 km (one way to ridge) 14.8 km total
Gain: unknown
High Point: unknown
Difficulty: Long Day Hike, unofficial trails & route, creek crossings

Saturday, May 6, 2006 - Eagle Hill

This is another hike in the Sibbald flats area. This hike takes you to the edge of the Indian reservation. The view from here is quite good even though you are not in the mountains.

Hike Details:
Distance: 10.5 km total
Gain: 332 m
High Point: 1722 m
Difficulty: Day Hike

Today Len wants to hike up Moose Mountain. I have been up here before, the trip si quiet easy. We are unsure if the road is open right now. We may end up with a longer day than we planned if we have to hike the access road. If so there are a few options in the area, Parire mounatain being one of them.

Scramble Details:
Distance: 14 Km
Gain: 470 m
High Point: 2437 m
Difficulty: Day Hike
