Monday, July 11, 2005, 9 AM - Chester Lake Lot.
Today I am off to climb Galatea 3185m. Current alt is 1916m that should be a gain of 1270m. The sky is overcast and it is trying to rain. Most of the summits are in cloud. This does not bode well for a successful summit. Let hope the weather improves.
10:24 AM - Chester Lake, 2217m
I am not sure if it is worth summiting there is a lot of snow on the upper reaches of Galatea. The guide book says don't go if snow. I know we all like to curse Allan Kane but he would not put it in the book if there was not a reason. All the summits over 3000m are playing peek-a-boo with the clouds. I am going to go on to the lake below the mountain.
12:30 PM - Looking down on the 3rd lake - 2730m
I do not feel like going much farther. The summit is still covered in cloud, like most of the other summits. It has even rained once on the way up here.
I took a close look at the snow on the summit, that I could see, someone(s) have summited recently. I see footprints going up and boot skis tracks down. It does not look like the clouds are going to lift soon either. At least I know more about the route now.
3:30 PM - Back at car
After a peasant walk down I arrived safely, not without the usual afternoon rain. I think you can set your watch by the rain.
